Cybersecurity aspects of digital water management

Within the framework of the Ludovika Scholars Program, Petar Cisar, Professor of the Department of Informatics and Computer Science at the University of Criminalistics (Criminal Justice) and Law Enforcement, Belgrade, visited the Ludovika University of Public Service between 9-13 October 2023.

Petar Cisar is the author of more than 20 publications in impact factor journals and several textbooks and monographs. He is a member of the Budapest-based Hungarian Fuzzy Society (John von Neumann Computer Society), an external member of the Public Board of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and a habilitated doctoral candidate in Hungary.

After arriving in Budapest; he held a detailed discussion with the Department of Water and Environmental Policy of the Faculty of Water Sciences to outline future plans for cooperation between the two departments. He concluded the first day of his stay with a gala dinner, where he together with the other guests of the Ludovika Scholars Program and the members of the Board of the Program got to know each other in a more informal atmosphere.

On the second day of his visit, the lecturer arrived at the campus of the Faculty of Water Sciences in Baja, where he was first welcomed by Eszter Bonyai, Head of the International Office, and then met with the faculty researchers in a round table discussion. The same day Petar Cisar had a working lunch with the Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Tibor Bíró.

In the afternoon, the students from Baja attended the lecture of the professor entitled "Cybersecurity aspects of digital water management". The topic was cyber security. Peter first explained the different concepts of cyber security to the audience. These included "SCADA" systems, "AI" and other types of "malware". He then discussed the stages of IT intrusions and how to prevent them. In the second part of his presentation, he discussed the weaknesses and vulnerabilities of systems in the water sector. He concluded by discussing the use of "SCADA" systems in the water sector and illustrated how they can be secured against cyberattacks. The audience listened with interest to the professor's presentation.

The day following his visit to Baja was spent at the Faculty of Law Enforcement. First, he had a personal meeting with the Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Gábor Kovács. Then he broadened his horizon with a lecture to the students of the Faculty entitled "General concepts of cyber security, attack categorization and methods to ensure system security".

On Thursday, Dr. Gergely Deli, Rector of the Ludovika UPS, welcomed the fellows of the program, followed by Dr. Cisar's workshop "Security and Sustainability: practical examples of systems for attack detection and prevention" at the Institute for Environmental Sustainability, where he raised awareness of the importance of cybersecurity to the audience.

He concluded his visit to Budapest on Friday, and to crown his stay, he visited the Parliament during the morning.
