Ludovika Scholars Program: Professor Kamil Luczaj on symbolic boundaries and internationalization of Polish academia

Dr. Kamil Luczaj, as a guest lecturer in the Ludovika Scholar Program visited the University of Public Service and as it is expected he held a research workshop and a public lecture, both related to his current research field.

Professor Luczaj presented critical approches of social class as a possible framework for interpreting academic career paths. The workshop was attended by members of the Department for Science Strategy, involved, as part of their work duties, in academic internationalisation. The lecturer emphasized that research in the field of academic career paths and a class interpretation of knowledge production started and was developed mostly in the United States. The American new social class theory should necessarily be adapted and reworked to some extent to suit a Central European context. Professor Luczaj plans to conduct a comprehensive regional research on social class and academic career paths in Central Europe, and he needs regional partners. The Department for Science Strategy showed interest in participating in a joint research project.

The guest presented the characteristics of Polish academic excellence to the participants of the workshop. The internationalization of Polish higher education in the region is an exemplary practice that should be followed, therefore the relationship with the visiting expert is crucial from the point of view of possible domestic adaptation.

Professor Luczaj presented different concepts of identity in an interdisciplinary context and the phenomenon of diversity in academia and higher education. In the second half of the lecture, he also presented his most recent research results on the topic. At the end of his 90-minute lecture, the audience had the opportunity to ask Professor Luczaj some questions. The exciting scientific presentation took place in front of a full house, which also shows the students' needs to meet international scholars.
